80’s Music Wednesday
If one have jams as a tiny tike, then this would definitely be one of them. The song has always been a vivid memory as a favorite, and I continue to love it. Let's have a little fun with Walk Like An Egyptian by The Bangles.
80’s Music Wednesday
I really, really love Duran Duran. It has been just the thing for me to listen to this past week. I have posted the song Rio, previously, and as much as I enjoy the song, it is not my favorite. Alas, my favorite is a track that I doubt they will ever perform live at their concert. Just too many other things to cover, and this wasn't one of their biggest hits. I still love it, and maybe one day they pull out this song at the next Duran Duran concert I attend. I give to you, New Moon On Monday by Duran Duran. Enjoy!
Wish List Friday
80’s Music Wednesday!
Since it's Christmas Eve, I figured this Band Aid contribution would be perfect. Nothing said Christmas in the 80's quite like this track, Do They Know It's Christmas?
Happy Holidays, Everyone!
Also, a side note for next year, but if anyone know of some 80's Chanukah songs, please, please send them my way!!! That would fantastic!
10 Gift Ideas for the Nerd in Your Life
While fellow nerds and geeks know all the ins and outs of finding the best holiday gifts for each other, our family and friends that don’t partake in our particular interests can be at quite a loss when it comes to gift giving. I am here to help with a few reasonably priced gift ideas for that the beloved geek in your life.
SuperFight!
$35.00
What can I say? We love fun card games that are both ridiculous and thought provoking. This is a perfect example. While the initial pack retails for about $35, you can up the fun with expansion packs. There are various, including a kid friendly version. One snag is that this product is only available through the website which is linked in the photo above.
Funko Pop! Figures
$7.00 to $12.00
Action figures are pretty much a staple of nerd gear, but these adorable little things make us smile. I am known to have my own collection. While the Pop! collection doesn't cover all loves, it is certainly growing. I'm holding out for a Captain Marvel someday. It's still not hard to find something that the special person in your life can enjoy. Prices can very depending on retired products and availability, but most are still very affordable and found various places such as Amazon or even Barnes & Noble.
Nerd Wear
$15.00 to $35.00
Geeks love wearing their love as well. I personally covet the above item from www.thinkgeek.com, but whatever the fav or your givee is, there is most likely a shirt of some sort. Where to buy something? Online is usually your best bet, but some stores like your local comic book shops or even Hot Topic partake in a little festiveness as this. Best plan for finding a shirt you need is to Google that character or name with t-shirt. It should point you in the right direction.
Blankets
$20.00 to $40.00
Whether it is a long night of gaming or a marathon in front of the television, why not be cozy while it happens? I am a blanket fan, and I know plenty of people that are as well. Prices can vary depending on quality and size, but you can find decent ones within the above price range. I submit the power of Google to help you find something.
Glasses
$20.00 to $40.00
We may be drinking a tall glass of milk or a tall glass of something else entirely, but our inner child gets into quite the tizzy if we drink form a cup with our favorite characters on it. It is mostly nostalgia for the good old days of sippy cups and collector's glasses from various fast food chains. We love it!
Travel Mugs and Tumblers
$10.00 to $20.00
A lot of us would love to save money on beverages as far as tea and coffee go. If we could take things from home to the office without have to stop at the local coffee spot, we would probably be able to spend more money on things we don't need. Thus the brilliance of the gift. Also some of us have strict personalization rules when it comes to the office, and if it's not practical, it has no place. This is a great way to get around that little rule. Even regular mugs would help that coffee drinker get through the workday.
Cookware
$30.00
It could be an apron or a utensil, but if we can nerd it, we will. The kitchen is not safe from this. Prices will vary depending on the item. The above is probably a great idea for that Trekkie in your life. Again Google is the tool of choice.
Calendars
$20.00 to $40.00
We all need to know what day it is, and what better way to do so. They make calendars for practically anything. If your friends and family are like me. I always end up buying two, one for home and one for the office. I usually get myself a Dean Winchester one for the house and a Supernatural one for work. Keep in mind if it is a gift intended for the office. Make sure there is nothing offensive in it. Don't want to give that special someone the added bonus of a trip to HR. I always have to check my Supernatural ones for weapons and gore.
Board Games
$30.00 to $40.00
Classic board games with our favorite fandom twists, are like gifts from above for us nerds and geeks. Clue, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit are known for these variants. Hell, I just found out Supernatural just came out with a version of Clue. Yeah, good luck getting a hold of that little gem this Holiday season.
Wall Candy
$30.00
We love posters and art pieces, and artsy ones at that. The internet is filled with prints and original art pieces. Etsy is a great place to get original pieces from artist that want to share their love and talents. While it can hold the same drawback as Ebay, and what you buy may not be what you get, the majority of the sellers are legit and very helpful. Be warned that the prices can very from reasonable to high. But you are paying for quality and talent, so you judge that one on your own.
80’s Music Wednesday
I was going to play a Christmas song this week, but I was jamming to this song this morning and just had to share it. If this doesn't perk up your day, I don't know what will. May I present Together in Electric Dreams by Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder.
Controlling Perspective
A simple way of describing the events that have been brewing towards climax in Ferguson is controversy. But we are not simple creatures, nor is this a simple matter. What I am not going to do is tell you my opinion and tell you why you are wrong or right in what you believe or feel. There seems to be plenty of that going around. If this is what you want to hear, you’re not going to get it. I am hoping what you get is something much more valuable.
Perspective is a fragile concept. It shapes how we as humans funnel our emotions and look upon our daily lives. It creates us, gives us growth, and can, most importantly, change us. The most difficult part about perspective is that it can come in many various forms. Everyone you meet has a different perspective due to the different lives they have led. I’m not going to lie, it is hard to accept and recognize this, because at the end of the day you only worry about what effects you and keeps you alive. It is instinct, and not an easy thing to change or even recognize.
Again, this is not an opportunity to express my opinion and try to drive you towards an idea that I feel is important as far as Ferguson is concerned. I won’t do this, because I don’t feel I have the appropriate perspective for it at this time. My opinion is still in great need of education. The education part is the problem. Education should be based in fact and reliability, but it is difficult to find that when there is so much bias littering the field. Instead I will tell you about my own perspective concerning another matter. I want to tell you why I decided to not become a journalist when I was fifteen.
We as a nation were reeling from the tragedy that was the Columbine shootings. It was a terrible time to be a teenager and a student. We were shown that we weren’t safe in school, and that bullying had reached a whole new level. I, a budding journalist, wanted to do my part in bringing out the truth, and I watched the news religious for information. The media was using all of its efforts to profile the shooters and make some kind of sense for the rest of the country. A local news station decided to use a tactic that is all too familiar in the world that is journalism. It is a concept known as “spin.” I was taught this as well in my journalism classes. Hell you may have come across it in your earlier English courses in high school. It is the very tactic that makes up a persuasive essay. Opinions are not to be specified directly, but you are allowed to drive the audience to whatever destination you wish.
It took only one television news report to destroy any hope of me becoming a professional journalist. I officially didn’t want to be a part of it anymore when a local television news team interviewed awaiting fans for a Marilyn Manson concert that was happening in Indianapolis that night. The media had made it very clear that in several earlier reports that the shooters were fans of the singer as well. They interviewed the fans and asked them their opinions concerning the recent shooting. Most of them were teenagers, the eldest probably being in their early twenties. The majority looked as one would expect from a group of Marilyn Manson fans, very into black and eyeliner. Essentially, everything they look like in that moment only represents a fashion choice. It won’t tell the stories of their souls and beings.
Most of these kids expressed their support for the victims and shock over the tragedy. One by one, the reporter moved down the line of people. When enough were interviewed, the reporter turned to the camera and finished his report. He didn’t comment on the concern and support he just heard, he utilized spin instead. He discussed what kind of individuals the shooters were and then stated that they were just like the kids behind him and all other fans of Marilyn Manson. That statement was outrageous to those who know better, but subtle enough to sound like truth. I, myself enjoyed Marilyn Manson’s music at the time, and according to the statement he just made, I also became most likely to enact a school shooting. Dreams of journalism died at that point.
The majority of you are either ridiculing me for this outrageous conclusion or shocked to ever think I could compare myself to that. These are absolutely great responses and what I expect. These reactions do, however, weigh heavily with the knowledge of knowing me. Those that have this knowledge of me, know that I am truly not capable of this. That knowledge effects your perspective. What about the other readers that do not know me? They don’t have the luxury of that knowledge and are simply left with the facts stated that I am a Marilyn Manson fan and according to that news report I could be a suspect one day.
This, my friends, is what news has come to with the added bonus of social media allowing it to reach farther than it could have ever hoped. The news does report news, but it has no problem tweaking it for its own gain. We can’t blame the news for this either. It has become the nature of the beast. Once upon a time, the news existed without ratings or fear of competion. That time was the final time we received unbiased news that we could fully trust without question. When ratings became the heart of news casting, pointing out who was being watched more, it opened the door to allow in money, and that became the biggest voice where news was concerned. No one has a job unless people are watching or reading, and that is the life blood of the news. It has become its survival. All they need for you to do is show up. All they need is bait.
A great example of “spin” is from this past Halloween season. A sixteen year-old collapsed and died while in a haunted house. Every headline for this story was some variation of “girl dies in haunted house.” The news was betting on you, the reader, assuming that the haunted house killed the girl, and you would show up to find out more. What happened to this poor girl was that she suffered from several medical conditions and lived on borrowed time as it was. It was merely coincidence that she passed away while inside of a haunted house. All of the reports state this exactly that, once you read or listen to the rest of the story. Sometimes people don't read past the headline, and that is simply doing a great injustice to one's self. This is what controlling perspective means.
Whatever you are watching or reading, understand that perspective is important. Not everything you read will be false or is trying to lead you somewhere. Unfortunately, you have to have the knowledge to understand the difference. If you take anything from this post, please take this. You, and only you, have the power to choose and change your perspective, and that ultimately makes only you responsible for that perspective. So choose wisely my friends and try to continue to educate yourselves.
Our Boys Sure Know How to Celebrate 10 Years Together
Dean and Sam have been steadily courting their fans for ten years now. The first few dates brought the expected cuteness and awkward moments that all relationships begin with, but we did manage enough moments to give a commitment a go. Here we still are ten years later. This relationship has always been easy. We both have had our ups and downs, but forgiveness has always been key. We forgave them for the bugs episode and damn near all of season six. They forgave us for our over active imaginations where Wincest and Destiel were concerned.
Then the 200th date came upon us, and we should have known those boys would have had something special in mind. When the boys intend to treat us they go all out. This was no exception. They took us out to a show. A show that brought us down memory lane. And like any good couple, while the majority of the time was fun and entertaining, both sides slipped in a few sarcastic jokes over the other’s faults that held just enough venom to show that while we have forgiven, we have not forgotten. The boys let us know that there was no sex in subtext, and we reminded them that they still had another brother.
Before the show aired, we, the fans, knew that this occasion was coming. The show runners wouldn’t tell us everything about the 200th episode, but it did state that it would be a love letter. And what a love letter it was. Even after word got out that the episode would have musical elements, everyone was hyped that we would see Sam and Dean singing, but even that was curbed in the most amazing way. The episode created a musical based on the Chuck Shirley books that just happen to be written novels of the boys lives since Dean pulled Sam out of Stanford to when Sam made with the swan dive into the cage. The boys didn’t sing, which honestly, worked out better for their characters. I know fan girls would drool over themselves to hear Jensen Ackles serenading them, but outside of Dean’s demon lust for karaoke, how manly and badass would that have made him look. Dean’s character can be the butt of the joke at times, but I think the show did a good thing with keeping the melodies to these school girls.
Sure, Misha Collins or Mark Sheppard weren’t in the episode. Regardless of the favoritism that the fans hold towards these characters, the episode did right by taking it down to the basics that are our boys. Hell, they recreated the “we got work to do” scene, which was just lovely. It was well written and well done, filled with every element that Supernatural has come to be known for. I’m sure this was a weird trip for both of the characters, but it reminded them as well as their fans what is so damn important about this show, family. The fans are a part of that family too.
This episode showcased one of the main reasons I am such a loyal fan. It showed how much all of the people that put together Supernatural truly love their fans. I have seen plenty of shows express their love of their fans in little articles or behind the scenes specials showcasing crew expressing that love. I have never seen a show in all my 30 years of nerdom actually incorporate the fans in the manner that this show does. The damn fourth wall of this television show has been broken so many times, I have lost count at this point. The French Mistake is a massive fan favorite, but it is was ultimately an apology for the lost directions and brittle plot lines that season held. The show knew it had been a rough season, and created an episode that lay all of that dirty laundry right out on the table. The fans ate it up and commended the show for it, hanging on for what would turn out being a pretty fantastic seventh season. The 200th episode held all of those crazy antics that fans love to bring to the table and made the show damn near interactive. Hell some of the cast live tweeted during the episode to add an even more intimate level for the fans. It has become a truly powerful family.
I will continue to watch this show, because it reminds me of how much I matter to it. Whether I’m on my sofa or at one of the conventions, my love and enjoyment has always been reciprocated. So thank you Supernatural for this amazing gift of television and entertainment. It has been one hell of a road trip, and I don’t see this road ending anytime soon.
The Zombie 10
Shaun of the Dead
I personally feel that this is the funniest of the comedy zombie movies out there. It opened the door to the modern comedy genre of zombie films. The problem you may have with this film, is that it is British. If you are not a fan of British humor, then you will probably not get this film. Fun little fact Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reprised their roles for a cameo on Phineas and Ferb recently.
Zombieland
Another hilarious zombie comedy that most likely wouldn’t have been made if the above hadn’t done so well. I will say that when Hostess originally stated they were shutting down their factories my thoughts immediately went to Tallahassee and his endless search for Twinkies. Luckily for him, the company has been bought and saved, and Twinkies are now in continuous supply once again. Bill Murray’s best as well.
Resident Evil
I know that some can give or take the original movie, but we still love the series. Most have learned to forgive the first one like myself. For as much literary symbolism that has been shoved done my throat from high school to college. The Alice in Wonderland theme totally escaped my attention until Resident Evil: Extinction. I was letting the credits play when a cover of White Rabbit started, which I thought was weird for a whole second and then started to cuss myself out for not even seeing the obvious. She’s named Alice. I’m an idiot.
Dawn of the Dead
Romero obviously has to be placed on the list somewhere. While this isn’t what I consider his masterpiece, it is a pretty damn good alternative. I prefer the late 70’s original, but the 2004 version was a decent. What made it so interesting was the use of the mall. It seemed like a pretty good place to hole up, because it should be well stocked. It taught us that malls aren’t fool proof.
Night of the Living Dead
It is the grand pappy of what our generation loves about zombie movies. If Romero hadn’t made this film, he may have not made the rest of his masterpieces. Thus we may never have any of the zombie films that we love today. Dare I say no Walking Dead. That’s how pivotal this movie was to generations of writers and storytellers. This literally is the film that started it all.
Night of the Comet
Not exactly a masterpiece, but one that I’m nostalgic about. My brother and I would always see this one during a Saturday movie matinee on television. It is pretty crappy, but that’s why I enjoy it. No one did crap quite like the 80’s. The premise is that due to a comet passing, it completely turns those who watched the night sky show into a giant pile of dust or a deranged, mutated zombie. The few individuals that stayed indoors due to the event are left to not only survive the unnerving solitude, but the crazy mutated things that want to kill them.
Planet Terror
I do enjoy the humor in this one, but it is inspired by the Grindhouse movies of the past, and gore is high. It is a Robert Rodriguez film. If it’s not a Spy Kids movie then blood is what you will get. It is still very entertaining though.
Warm Bodies
It is a cute little love story about a zombie that falls in love with a girl. I had a really good time with this movie, because it was the first of its kind in our recent obsession with the undead. And no, My Boyfriend’s Back, doesn’t count. I loved that movie when I was a kid. This movie was pretty refreshing, and I definitely recommend.
The Returned
This one you may not have heard of. If you have Netflix, you need to check it out. In this post zombie apocalypse world, a barrier drug for the virus has been made. It has stipulations, though. It is only works within a short time frame after exposure. It must be taken every 24 hours exactly everyday, or the effects will reverse for good, and it is made from the undead that fully revert to zombie form. Those individuals now returned can function normally in society, but fear of what they could become has made them pariahs. Everyone was pretty much dealing for the most part in this world, even with the hate. Unfortunately, the success of stopping people from becoming a fully turned zombie means that they have all but eliminated their resources for the temporary medicine and it is running out fast. The race is to find a synthetic replacement, but politics and money stand in the way. Panic sets in when word of the drug shortage gets out. This is a great and unique story and a nontraditional zombie flick. It is very interesting.
The Dead
This one might also be an unknown movie. It is a South African film that showcases what the African plains would like if run over by zombies. Giving the budget they had to work with, it’s pretty damn good. It is a fantastic movie infact. I personally only had issues with the story turn towards the end of the movie. It really could have been all out amazing if that change hadn’t been chosen.
